A fun day at Church

Those of you who know me well, might feel really worried when reading this title. No, I haven’t turned into a reborn Christian overnight and I also managed to resist Jehovah’s Witnesses’ visit last week. It’s just that we got an invitation from our lovely babysitter Nicole, who’s a member of the Otumoetai local church, to go to their ‘Kids go Wild’ event. We didn’t expect anything major, but thought it would be good for Ilias and Jacob to go wild with some other kids for a change, instead of thrashing our place. On arrival we were astonished at seeing the crowds in the church ground. There were dozens of attractions, all designed for kids: an old but really cool merry-go-round, rock climbing, a couple of bouncy castles for different age groups, go carts, free ice cream, spraying a hose with the help of a fireman, rides in a horse carriage and plenty of indoors activities. Kids were playing basketball and golf inside the church (imagine that happening in Belgium!). Scott’s South African workmate Crest, his wife Tirry and daughter Alayna joined us and loved it too. There were so many people that it took us over two hours to find Nicole, who made Ilias really happy by giving him a Spiderman look. Just when we thought it was really time to leave, we bumped into Greet and her kids, who were also astonished with the whole event, which was only possible thanks to the help of over a hundred volunteers, all church members. The team seemed to be full of really cool boys , girls and young families. At 7pm the whole party was over. You should have seen the mess inside the church building! But the team cleaned the place in a very efficient way in no time. Really impressive!

Anyway, we had a great time at church today. It was interesting to see that being a church member can actually be fun. Nicole is definitely loving it. I’m glad for her and all those other happy church members, but I guess it will always something that is too‘far from my bed’... Thanks for the party anyway!
